When some people think of Memorial Day, they think of the official beginning of summer, or Cook-outs, a three-day weekend, or maybe catching a few laps of the Indy 500. And all of those things are good and nice but, we also need to keep in mind what we are celebrating.
Memorial Day (formerly known as Decoration Day) first was started to honor soldiers who died in the civil war. However, later after World War I, it was widened to honor all soldiers who died in any war, or military confrontation. Although Veterans Day is also celebrated, Memorial Day is the most recognized holiday to honor our armed forces. So, as you celebrate Memorial Day weekend with your family and friends, don't forget about all of the armed forces that have died, and those who are still fighting for America and America's freedom.
